CLEAN CURRENTS 2026
Laboratory Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), U.S. Department of Energy
Dr. Deng is a Laboratory Fellow in the Earth System Science Division of the Energy & Environment Directorate at PNNL. He directs the Bio-Acoustics & Flow Laboratory, an accredited multi-disciplinary R&D laboratory, addressing a broad range of engineering and ecological issues, with an emphasis on environmental monitoring and risk assessment for hydropower, wind, marine, and hydrokinetic energy systems. He has developed many technologies in acoustic telemetry and environmental sensing. He led the development of stochastic blade-strike models for estimating the biological performance of large turbines. He was selected as one of the 78 outstanding young engineers (30-45 years old) in the U.S. to participate in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE)'s Annual Symposium on Frontiers of Engineering in 2012. He was also selected as one of the 30 outstanding scientist/engineers in the U.S to participate in the first Brazil-US Frontiers of Science and Engineering co-hosted by the National Academy of Sciences, NAE, and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in 2014. He was awarded the PNNL Laboratory Director's Award for Exceptional Engineering Achievement in 2015. He has coauthored 100+ journal articles and 100+ government technical reports. He is also the U.S. representative for the International Energy Agency's Hydropower & Fish Annex. . For more information, please visit his lab website http://bfl.pnnl.gov/.
