This in-the-field technical tour is a unique opportunity to see the Stewart Mountain project and learn more about water management and hydropower production along the Salt and Verde rivers. The 13-MW Stewart Mountain Hydro Project features a 105-foot-high concrete arch dam. This dam, along with five others, was built by the Bureau of Reclamation in the early 1900s to provide water in the valley for farming. Salt River Project (SRP) operates the projects.
Stewart Mountain Dam has undergone a major stability rehabilitation, including a hydrologic and seismic upgrade using post-tensioned anchors.

About the Tour
Two buses will leave from the Convention Center to transport participants to and from the dam. One bus leaves at 7:00 AM and returns to the Convention Center by 10:00 AM; the second leaves at 7:45 AM and returns to the Convention Center by 10:45 AM. Your bus will be assigned ahead of time and communicated to you in the Know Before You Go email.
Tour participants will follow a designated route featuring visual displays and informational content about the dam and its history. SRP staff and their partners Schnabel Engineering and Stantec will be positioned at select locations along the tour path.
The tour includes a view from the top of the dam and a walk through the powerhouse.
For safety and comfort, participants should wear sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes appropriate for outdoor walking conditions and open grate stairs.
Please Note: there is a significant amount of walking up hills and stairs on the tour in the desert heat. SRP will provide plenty of water stations during the tour.
