Zhiqun (Daniel) Deng

Dr. Daniel Deng is a Laboratory Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and an adjunct professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. He directs PNNL’s accredited Bio-Acoustics & Flow Laboratory, which addresses multidisciplinary engineering and ecological challenges across energy, energy storage, sensing, and environmental systems. He has developed multiple licensed technologies spanning sensing and energy systems, holds 20 U.S. patents, and has coauthored more than 170 peer-reviewed publications.

His honors include the 2025 Fish Passage Career Achievement Award from the AFS–ASCE/EWRI Joint Committee on Fisheries Engineering and Science; R&D 100 Awards (2021 and 2025); and the Federal Laboratory Consortium Excellence in Technology Transfer Award (2020). He was named PNNL Inventor of the Year in 2022 and a Battelle Distinguished Inventor in 2024.

He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of ASME. He earned his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Learn more at https://www.pnnl.gov/technology/jsats.
