Jim Tobin is a Senior R&D Staff member for the Manufacturing Sciences Division located at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Jim’s current research focus is on very large-scale metal and composite industrial components needed for energy applications with the goal of helping US manufacturing industry competitiveness.

Prior to joining ORNL in 2023, Jim served as a Principal Engineer for GE Renewable Energy for 12.5 years focused on advanced manufacturing and field prototype testing of large scale components for wind and hydro turbines including wind turbine blades, towers, hydro runners and many other components. Prior to joining GE Jim held senior engineering product development/manufacturing positions at Procter & Gamble, Britax Child Safety & Specialty Manufacturing and has decades of hands-on experience developing and testing new products and manufacturing techniques. Jim has over 60 granted US patents.
