Roger Hutton
CLEAN CURRENTS 2025
Chief Engineer at New England Hydropower Company LLC
Between 2007 and 2014 Roger was instrumental in the revitalization of small hydro in the UK. He developed, engineered, and constructed multiple sites many based abound the Archimedes Screw Turbine (AST). At the time, the UK licencing authority for hydro, The Environment Agency, were engaged in simplifying site permitting toward a streamlined and efficient process. Roger supported that effort which was ultimately refined to allow fast and effective licencing while acknowledging the existing legal parameters. Since 2012, Roger joined the New England Hydropower Company, LLC (NEHC) team to develop non-invasive hydropower in the U.S. in what should be a thriving sub-2-Megawatt hydro generation space. The climate in the U.S. for permitting and approval has been a frustrating challenge in getting all the necessary Federal, State and Local permissions and permits and varies significantly from his experience in the UK. It hinders the development of clean energy for the marketplace at virtually every level.
