B6b: Unmanned Aerial Systems: Performing Geologic Mapping and Inspections of a Concrete Arch Dam

An unmanned aerial system (UAS) will be operated in September of 2023 at Sun River Dam to perform cutting-edge geologic mapping and evaluation of the rock foundation and abutments.

Sun River Dam is a concrete arch dam and was constructed in 1915. No geologic mapping was available at the time to assist in the evaluation the foundation condition. The dam is 130 feet tall with a crest width of 260 feet.

The UAS will collect photogrammetric data to generate a 3D model of the dam and abutments for the purpose of digitally based automatic foundation stability analysis. In addition, crack mapping of the downstream face will also be performed as the dam’s baseline crack map.

In this demonstration, Reclamation will show how it used the drone in this cutting-edge way to perform geologic mapping and evaluation of the rock foundation and abutments.
