Clean Currents 2022

New Development: Building New Hydro at Existing Infrastructure

The idea of adding power generation components to existing civil infrastructure … dams, conduits, and canals … is not a new concept.

What is new are the financial incentives included in the recently passed Infrastructure Reduction Act (IRA) that will be hugely beneficial for the waterpower industry.
For example, the law specifies a 10-year investment tax credit/production tax credit (or direct pay) for the retrofitting of existing dams to add a hydropower generatiing component.

In addition, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) provides grant funding for building new hydro at existing infrastructure.

Attend this fast-paced session to explore:
– What is the technical feasibility for adding hydro to existing infrastructure?
– What are the best ways to tap into available funding sources?
– What are the opportunities …. and challenges … of developing projects on lands and at infrastructure owned by third parties (federal government, tribes, etc.)?
– How to put innovations, new data compilations, and cost-reduction approaches to work to make new development more feasible?

Continuing the Learning! At the conclusion of this panel, head over to the Innovation Power House to see a technology demonstration of a new tool for use in identifying opportunities for building new hydro at existing dams, with additions of batteries and/or hydrogen.
