About Southern Company

Southern Company is one of the largest producers of electricity in the United States, with over 42,000 MW of generating capacity owned and operated by Alabama Power Company and Georgia Power Company.

While the portion of that capacity coming from hydro is less than 10%, it’s a valuable contributor.

To acknowledge that value, over the next 10 to 15 years, Southern Company is carrying out a complete overhaul of its 29 hydropower facilities. The company expects to invest more than $3 billion in installing 70 new turbines, rewinding 50 generators, and rehabilitating or replacing spillway gates, head gates, stoplogs, balance-of-plant equipment, switchgear, transformers, and control systems.
