Development of Hydropower Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (HEALs™)

For decades, the hydropower industry has been using mineral oil lubricants (petroleum oil) to generate hydroelectricity. Lubricant spills and leaks can never be avoided entirely. The hydropower industry is no exception. Water pollution is an issue whenever petroleum oil leaks into the water.

According to regulatory agencies, one gallon of mineral oil can contaminate 1 million gallons of water.

Polluted water is an environmental concern. Widely used petroleum-based lubricants have severe ecological and health-related issues. For instance, oil contamination presents severe threats to human health via hydrocarbon exposure through open air, burning, spilling, and leaking into the water, soil, and sediment. Growing awareness of the threats posed by petroleum-based oils and additives to health, the environment, and ecosystems highlights the urgent need to replace petroleum-based lubricants with alternative environmentally acceptable lubricants (EALs).

This poster presentation focuses on our innovative efforts in the development of HEALs™ using innovative and safer additive technologies developed by Polnox. These HEALs formulation development efforts show the performance of these products is like mineral oil lubricants used in the hydropower industry. Multiple industry-standard tests used to test the performance of mineral oils are tested HEALs™ and show that their key performance indicators (KPIs) are comparable to mineral oils used in the hydropower industry. Compared to mineral oil, the salient features and cost benefits of these new HEALs™ will also be presented.
