Cold Spray Coatings for Cavitation Repair: Tech Demo 1 in the Innovation Power House

Cavitation erosion is a major issue with aging hydropower equipment.

Current repair approaches, while temporarily addressing cavitation damage, result in increasing frequency of repair.

An alternative repair approach with improved cavitation erosion performance could have a game-changing impact on hydropower maintenance and performance.

Cold spray coatings have demonstrated the potential to provide far superior cavitation erosion resistance compared to current arc welding repair approach.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is developing the cold spray for application to cavitation in situ repair of hydropower turbines. The project is planned to culminate with a field application of the technology at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Little Goose Dam on the Snake River in Washington.
